How to ensure your dog has a spooktacular Halloween

Halloween, although fun for us, can be challenging for some of our dogs. Whilst some dogs enjoy lots of visitors and are excited to see new people others will find the doorbell constantly ringing and a change in routine stressful. With the right planning we can ensure that our dogs remain safe and happy. While we enjoy dressing up and eating lots of treats, it's important to ensure that our dogs can also enjoy the festivities without compromising their safety. Below are some tips to ensure everyone has a happy and safe Halloween..

Noise and visitors

Doorbells and costumed visitors can be frightening for some dogs and parties can become overwhelming. Ensure your dog has a 'safe space' somewhere quiet and out of the way. Closing curtains, playing calming music and offering the dog enrichment activities can help. Keeping the dog separated and away from the front door when trick-or-treaters knock to ensure they don't escape or become over anxious is imperative for safety.

Staying safe with sweets and chocolates

At Halloween sweets and chocolates are everywhere! Either for giving out toTrick-or-Treaters or enjoying at home. Beware that most sweets and chocolates are not dog friendly , chocolate, xylitol (found in sweets, particularly sugar free), raisins and some nuts are dangerous to dogs, so take extra care to keep treats out of reach and ensure children know not to share any sweets with the dog. It may be an idea to keep a few dog friendly treats available so no one is left out!

Dressing up

It may be tempting to dress your dog up for Halloween but unless your dog is already used to wearing a coat or jumper this may add extra stress and can cause overheating. Bandanas or a festive collar are a great alternative. If you really must dress your dog up ensure any outfit is not to tight fitting or constrictive, avoid outfits with lots of loose or dangly items or face coverings. Let your dog wear it a few times before the big night and look out for any signs of stress (lip licks, chewing the outfit, crouching, ears pinned back etc) and if the dog is unhappy then its better to leave it off.

Halloween should be fun for everyone, including your dog. With a little forward planning and awareness you can keep your dog safe, comfortable and you can enjoy the festivities without having to worry !
